Roderich comes from a fairly wealthy family but one wouldn't be able to tell based on his appearance as he chooses to live a modest lifestyle. He trained very early on to compete in tournaments and was successful for many years. However, during his teenage years he struggled to keep up with new talent that was emerging in his country and in the European standings. He stopped battling all-together for two years until he discovered contests. This is where he found his true calling and returned to the top of his game. Though he still competes in tournaments from time to time, contests have become his main focus in his career.

Roderich's first Pokemon and ace is his Kricketune, and is a staple of his contest routines. Although he was always a decent battler, he was terrible at catching his own Pokemon. Much of his team was caught with the help of friends or were gifted to him from family members.
