A powerhouse trainer, Gilbert has been in competitive battling since he was a kid when he began partaking in junior tournaments that catered to children between 8 to 12 years old. Unlike his younger brother, Gilbert is more headstrong and likes to take risks. However the two men do share some similarities such as frequently training for long hours and keeping a balanced move set. He assisted Ludwig with his training when he first became a trainer and the two were later coached by some of their idols, who are held in high-regard in their home country.

Gilbert is toying with the idea of retirement but he's having too much fun participating in tournaments and travelling the world. He loves Dark-types and thinks if a spot in the Elite Four or in a Gym is offered to him, he may possibly take it and pass the competitive crown to his brother, who already surpasses him in both rankings. Gilbert's first Pokemon was a Poochyena (now a Mightyena) that he befriended when it wondered into the backyard of his family's home looking for food. However, his ace is his Aegislash.
